  • (Day 169) What Have You Created Lately?

steve-jobsThe other day I was reading an article about a critic from a online techno magazine that had a late night chat with Steve Jobs, CEO of Apple computer.  I think it’s pretty cool that Steve Jobs is having middle of the night chats with customer/critic(s) about technology. The conversation apparently went something like this.. the critic complained about how Apple wasn’t being revolutionary anymore and had, in fact, become part of the establishment. This is because Apple has been controlling what  developers could provide on a  iPod or iPad. Steve Jobs explained that he wanted the user to have a positive experience, and not have to be subject to things like pornography . The critic went on to complain that he should be able to do whatever he wanted on his device, and actually he and his wife like pornography. He was saying that Apple was turning into big brother.

First, let me declare that I have an opinion about this subject… and when you have an opinion it opens you up to critics. So, here is my truth. I am a huge Steve Jobs fan. I am a huge Apple fan. The reason is because they create easy to use technology and cool tools that I use everyday. Steve Jobs helped invent the personal computer, and refine and make prolific the windows concept. They invented the iPod and now the iPad and everyone else is just copying these tools. I like originals and I love the innovative thinkers that create them. How many people even have the chance to be involved in three major technological innovations in a lifetime (not to mention the creation of PIXAR)? The only other person in modern times was Thomas Edison. I have great respect for these people because through their work our lives get better.

Now, Apple is not perfect, and may have gotten so big there is some evil creeping into the company. But I don’t question the motives of the top people they have earned my trust. So when some average Joe starts to throw rocks at them it gets my attention.  Their exchange went on for quite some time and got pretty technical. After a while you could see that Steve Jobs was getting frustrated and he ended the conversation with this quote, “As for us, we are doing what we can to try and preserve the users experience we envision. You can disagree with us but our motives are pure…. By the way what have you done that is so great? Do you create anything or do you just criticize others work and belittle their motivations?”

    Touché… Steve

  • (Day 168) Trust BP ?

BPOn earth day I wrote “Trustees of the planet”,  since then things have gotten even worse. Oil is gushing from the bottom of the Gulf of Mexico and it has us all pretty concerned.  We trusted the people drilling offshore to do it right.  We now have a disaster of epic proportions. The slick is having devastating effects on the ecosystem and economy in the region. We do not yet know how bad it will get, or how long it will last, or who we should hold accountable. Who is responsible for this mess? BP and its subcontractors testified in Congress that the other person was responsible, it was so bad that even the President of the United States made a comment about the finger-pointing.  BP seems to lack the resources to stop the flow or clean up the oil that has already leaked. The well continues to spew from the ocean floor weeks after the accident.  I have heard BP CEO Tony Hayward say to the media that BP would clean this up and compensate the people for their losses. I have also heard him say the spill was relatively small compared to the volume of water in the Gulf, ouch! So is BP doing the right thing? Are they doing the best they can? Was it their subcontractors, or perhaps even the government to blame? One official, Chris Oynes, Associate Director of Offshore Energy and Minerals Management Program retired a month early, was he responsible?  What do you think about BP? Do you trust them?

You can take the poll below and cast your vote for how much trust you have for British Petroleum (BP) right now.

  • (Day 167) Stop The Killing In China

BalanceI am pained by the rash of school age children being murdered in China. Today, a man with a meat cleaver walked into a small private school, killed 2 adults and 7 children, then committed suicide. On April 30, a man armed with a hammer injured five preschool children in east China before setting himself on fire. On April 29, at least 28 children were injured when a man with a knife attacked a kindergarten in east China. On April 28, a man attacked 18 students and a teacher with a knife at a primary school in southern China. March 23, (the first report of this kind) a former community doctor stabbed eight children to death at an elementary school in eastern China.  He said he was upset about his lack of a love life before being killed by a firing squad. This story received wide media coverage and seemed to set off a series of copy-cat killers. [...]

  • (Day 166) A Day Of Peace

peacePart of being trustful is to be calm, being calm is taking some time to clear your head of all the garbage.  So what would be so wrong with taking a peace day once in a while. A day that you consciously agree that you will not answer the cell phone or get caught up in any  intense conversation or have to do anything. It is a day to be a human being not a human doing.  You don’t have to do anything, just enjoy the day. Take one day and protect your time and take a hike in the woods, go shopping, ride a motorcycle, sail, work in the garden, listen to music, paint, read something that inspires you. Refresh and relax but do it consciously. Today that’s exactly what I’m going to do. I am just going to be me and not have to do anything and be okay with that. Try it, I think you’ll like it.

  • (Day 165) High Hopes

holly Today I took a flight from Allentown Pennsylvania to St. Petersburg Florida and had the honor of sitting next to Holly. I took the first risk to say hello and ask her if she was coming… or going… home? She said, ” I was just about to ask you the same question.”  As we learned more about each other we found some interesting connections. #1 we had lived in the same town.  #2 she was familiar with the WINGS program I founded at Warren Hills High School. #3 her father owned a  business that was insured by our company.  #4 and most importantly, we found we are in the same business, the trust business. See, Holly is a hair stylist but to her, it’s all about trust… [...]

  • (Day 164) Mothers Day

momsToday is Mothers Day and I was thinking about trust and moms. The trust that exists between a mother and son (or daughter) is a special bond. I don’t know where I would be if I did not start out my life with the love and trust I have with my mom; it’s a sense of security that you can’t find anywhere else. We have a great relationship. She has always been there for me, and now we are there for each other. We talk openly about everything. Mom loves breakfast and I was honored to have time with her this morning. She always looks good, getting dressed up with everything matching. Our house was the same way, looking like something right out of Home and Garden magazine. When I visit her today it feels the same way, so comfortable I can easily fall asleep on the couch (to her chagrin). Here is a picture of mom after our Mothers Day breakfast. As we both are getting older, each one becomes more valuable.

  • (Day 163) Ticker Trust

dow.pdfHave we lost trust in the stock ticker itself?  What happened the day before yesterday?  Holy Cow… what if we can no longer trust the stock market? Here is a new term for you….”trading glitch”… really… a trading glitch? The stock market falls an unprecedented amount in 5 minutes and the explanation is a trading glitch? The definition of a glitch is a “minor problem that causes a temporary setback.”  It comes from the yiddish meaning “slippery place”. [...]
