  • (Day 236) Some Of My Own Medicine

The other day I had my own trust lesson. I was just completing an interview with Kenny Moore, the best-selling author of The CEO and the Monk We were conducting our interview at the First Presbyterian Church of Bloomfield in New Jersey. The  church was near his home and a friend of mine had arranged for me to use their facility. The church secretary Marlene and I agreed I could use the Pastor’s office for about 1 hour. The interview was one of the best I’ve ever done, and Kenny and I hit it off pretty well, but we ended up going over the time limit. Marlene came into the room and the above video shares our exchange. Thank you Marlene for keep me honest!

  • (Day 235) Yoda and Bill Clinton Agree on Trust

  • (Day 234) Never Again

ANNE FRANKYesterday I visited the Florida Holocaust Museum. As I approached the entrance, I realized I had set myself up for a heavy experience. It was not going to be a relaxing Sunday afternoon, but that was alright with me. I have only 765 days left on the Trust Tour and this was a great opportunity to remind myself what happens when trust really goes wrong. There is no more dramatic example in human history of selfishness, hate and manipulation. If you have been alive for the last decade or more you probably know enough about the holocaust to fill a small book, so I don’t need to describe all those horrors. I will say however, yesterday I felt myself hit new levels of outrage and sadness.

In my short visit, I started to identify some behaviors that are uncomfortably familiar and consistent with what happens in our society everyday. The only difference is the depth and the volume. It is not over, it is still happening today, just on a much smaller level. Below I listed the ones that likely contributed to horrible things we did to our fellow human beings during WWII.

  • (Day 232) Are You A Dolphin Or A Shark?

Above is a short video clip from Miami Seaquarium’s Robert Rose. He is speaking about the dolphins only natural predator, the shark. Sharks exhibit primitive behavior, focusing exclusively on survival. They are all about acquiring more for themselves, with little regard for anything or anyone else.  They have developed keen instincts to do just that, always at someone else’s expense. It is a egocentric view of the world, similar to humans…

The dolphin, on the other hand, has more intelligent, playful, and social behaviors. They have learned to work together in pods. They use the collective intelligence of the team to eat, play and protect themselves. This same team protects them from sharks. They can out smart sharks collectively and have been known to ram the sharks with their noses, effectively clearing them out of their territory. It’s a community view of the world, similar to some humans…

The cool thing about being a human being is we get to choose our behavior. Do have the ability to behave like a shark or dolphin. If you think about people, you know you can probably put them into one of these two categories.  We cannot control or change others behaviors, only our own, so I choose to be a dolphin. I choose it not only because it is right for me, but I believe our future depends on it. I can only hope enough people are making this same choice to keep us on the right track. That is why I am sharing this with you today, that is why I am on the Trust Tour and that is why I need your help.

  • (Day 231) Todd’s Tips

helpful_tips_image On March 13th 2002 at exactly 5:00 PM I wrote an email to myself. It was a difficult time and I was trying to push myself through. What I needed was some clear direction but from who or where? There was no one around that understood the depth of what I was going through. I decided I had to trust myself. there was no other choice. So I sat down and wrote Todd’s Tips. [...]

  • (Day 230) What Is Risk?

homework5[1]The other day my niece asked me to help her with her school homework project. She sent me an email saying she had to interview an entrepreneur.  I thought I would share my answers with you as trust uses many of the principles of entrepreneurship, especially risk.

    Jen,

You are making me work hard.. Here are the answers to your questions. Good Luck!

    1. What does risk taking mean to you?

As an entrepreneur I cannot be successful without taking some Risks. Risk can mean failure which brings up the emotion of fear and people avoid something that scares them. That’s also the reason so many people quit. Entrepreneurs know they must get beyond their fear of seeing failure as a learning experience. We adopt the philosophy of “failing faster” so we can be successful sooner. Think of Thomas Edison and the number of times he had to fail on his way to finding a successful light bulb.

    2. Would you say you need creativity to take risks, or courage? [...]
