On March 13th 2002 at exactly 5:00 PM I wrote an email to myself. It was a difficult time and I was trying to push myself through. What I needed was some clear direction but from who or where? There was no one around that understood the depth of what I was going through. I decided I had to trust myself. there was no other choice. So I sat down and wrote Todd’s Tips. [...]

(Day 230) What Is Risk?
The other day my niece asked me to help her with her school homework project. She sent me an email saying she had to interview an entrepreneur. I thought I would share my answers with you as trust uses many of the principles of entrepreneurship, especially risk.Jen,
You are making me work hard.. Here are the answers to your questions. Good Luck!
1. What does risk taking mean to you?
As an entrepreneur I cannot be successful without taking some Risks. Risk can mean failure which brings up the emotion of fear and people avoid something that scares them. That’s also the reason so many people quit. Entrepreneurs know they must get beyond their fear of seeing failure as a learning experience. We adopt the philosophy of “failing faster” so we can be successful sooner. Think of Thomas Edison and the number of times he had to fail on his way to finding a successful light bulb.
2. Would you say you need creativity to take risks, or courage? [...]

(Day 229) Is Jihad About Trust?
I have always been a bit confused by the term Jihad, which I understand to mean “Holy War”. It is an oxymoron, you know… two words used in a phrase that are in direct contradiction with each other. When I hear holy war, I get a picture of hate filled men with weapons in their hands chanting death to someone or some group. I wonder why all the hate? Why would anything connected to the word holy promote killing people? I admittedly am not an expert on the religions of the world, so when I say I don’t understand, I truly don’t get it.This an area I think we all can learn more about as it the most likely flash point in our world. So I starting with wikipedia and looked up the definition for Jihad. It says there are a wide range of opinions about the meaning of jihad. Muslims use the word in a religious context to refer to three types of struggles: 1) an internal struggle to maintain faith, 2) the struggle to improve the Muslim society, 3) or the struggle in a holy war. The differences of opinion are the result of different interpretation of the two most important sources in Islam, the Qur’an and the ahadith. In western societies the term jihad is often translated as “holy war”. Muslim authors tend to reject such an approach, stressing non-militant connotations of the word.

(Day 228) Are We Creating Our Own Meltdown?
This morning I was reading the Wall Street Journal when I came across an interview with John Malone, one of the top 500 richest people in the world. I was interested because my son thinks Sirius Radio is a good investment and Mr. Malone is President and Chairman of Liberty Global, Inc. which owns a 40% stake in Sirius. Sirius has had a tough go of it with highs of $70 early, but then last year hitting a low of 5 cents. John Malone was the white knight that came in at the last minute and saved the company from bankruptcy. Some may see that as benevolent others as opportunistic and some call him “Darth Vader,” a nickname given to him by Al Gore. -
(Day 227) My First Body Scan
Today I had my first my first full body scan. I must say that it happened all at once, I was not expecting it. There were not many people at the Fort Lauderdale airport, so I picked what looked like the shortest line at the security check point. I went through the standard process, taking off my belt, shoes and my hat, then putting my computer and my iphone in a separate bin. This time, instead of going through the metal detector, I was directed to a separate machine. I watched as the person in front of me stood inside the machine with her hands over her head, almost as if she was being arrested. What is this? What is going on here? Without explanation, the TSA officer asked me, “do you have anything in your pockets?” When I said no, she replied “then what is that in your shirt pocket sir?” I had some papers in there. “Take them out, and everything else in your pockets including your wallet and put them on the belt.”I did not like parting with my wallet at all. I did not know at the time but it was going to be out of my sight for a while. What I was going through suddenly reminded me of a scene in the movie Schindlers List where the Germans put the Jews in lines, barking orders at them, stripping them of all their possessions, telling them it was all going to be alright before sending them off in train cars to you know where. That may sound a little bit extreme, but whenever I go through airport security it makes me feel a bit naked and out of control, but this was just the start. I was directed to go inside the machine, turn sideways and stand with my feet spread on the green floor markers. I was told to put my hands above my head and stand still for several seconds.

(Day 226) Stop The Killing
CNN’s headline today was, “Quran doesn’t call for stoning, experts insists.” Just the thought of stoning gives me the creeps. What could be more scary then being surrounded by your community, each person holding a stone in their hand. In the end you will be killed and no one person will be to blame, it will be a community execution. The crime committed in this situation was a young girl fell in love with the wrong man, apparently a married one. When I read the headline, it sounded so ridiculous. It might as well have said, “experts have found that making human scarifies does not make it rain on our crops…”. You don’t need to be an expert to know that this is wrong, you just need to be capable of breathing. If you are alive you know this is not right. You know it because it is built into your DNA, you feel it in your gut. By the way… talking about something being wrong.. where is the guy that participated with her? Why is he not also being stoned? It sounds like we may also need to add discrimination to the conversation. This is truly stone age thinking. [...]

(DAY 225) Tornado Trust
Today is the last day of vacation and I really need a break from blogging to spend some time with the family. Keeping up this blog everyday has proven to be a real challenge. Yesterday I spent half the day just working on the technology trying to upload video from a cruise ship. I love the tour but I probably should have called that blog Technology Trust. We’ve come a long way with technology but we have a long way to go. I am trying to simplify it so I can spend more time on the tour thinking and listening . So I am going to keep this blog kind of short and simple and get back to enjoying my last day with the family.
