steroidsThe list is long, Pete Rose, Barry Bonds, Michael Vick, Marion Jones, Mark McGwire, Rafael Palmeiro, Alex Rodriguez, Tiger Woods and now possibly Lance Armstrong?  Why are our heros turning to zeros? If you haven’t heard yet… Floyd Landis admitted today that he was doping when he won the Tour de France. That’s nothing new,  he was stripped the prize years ago. But now he’s accusing Lance Armstrong of doing it too. This bothers me because Lance has stood the test of time, he had beaten all the naysayers and come out clean.

I sure hope Lance Armstrong does not turn out to be a fraud. His lawyers are saying that Floyd Landis tried to blackmail Lance and that Floyd is the fraud. All this stuff just undermines sports, it undermines bicycling and it undermines trust. Lance Armstrong is an inspiration to many, a cancer survivor who came back from near death to be a seven-time winner of the Tour de France. It’s what children dream about… they want to be like Lance. It’s why adults think it’s still possible… If Lance  can do it, maybe I still can do it too.

When our sports heros fall the repercussions are enormous. The sound is heard around the world, not just by adults but young impressionable minds. If Pete, Barry, Michael, Tiger and now Lance..?..  cheat, then surely everyone is doing it, right?  If they  get ahead this way then everybody must be doing it, that means I need to do it too.  It is a subtle and insidious message but it is there… the way to become a champion is to cheat … Is it worth it?  Think about  it, you become rich and famous and if you are caught,  you just deny deny deny and blame others.  You might even get on late night TV or a reality TV show. The same is true for a CEO’s that cheat,  fake it and you’ll make it… get fired, blame others, people have short memories. You can cruise  on your yacht while people are forgetting. Maybe  I am starting to sound like a critic and it is time to switch to something more positive.

When I look around,  I see real hero sitting next me on airplanes, landscaping a property, checking out groceries, or serving people in a restaurant. Everyday people that are making it happen one step at time.  They are moms and dads and sons and daughters, people that face challenges and do the right thing anyway. Of course, I am talking about you. I know you are working hard at “IT” (Integrity and Trust) or you would not be here.  I believe in you, I believe in what we are doing here and for the sake of the generations to come I sure hope Lance Armstrong did it right.

BPOn earth day I wrote “Trustees of the planet”,  since then things have gotten even worse. Oil is gushing from the bottom of the Gulf of Mexico and it has us all pretty concerned.  We trusted the people drilling offshore to do it right.  We now have a disaster of epic proportions. The slick is having devastating effects on the ecosystem and economy in the region. We do not yet know how bad it will get, or how long it will last, or who we should hold accountable. Who is responsible for this mess? BP and its subcontractors testified in Congress that the other person was responsible, it was so bad that even the President of the United States made a comment about the finger-pointing.  BP seems to lack the resources to stop the flow or clean up the oil that has already leaked. The well continues to spew from the ocean floor weeks after the accident.  I have heard BP CEO Tony Hayward say to the media that BP would clean this up and compensate the people for their losses. I have also heard him say the spill was relatively small compared to the volume of water in the Gulf, ouch! So is BP doing the right thing? Are they doing the best they can? Was it their subcontractors, or perhaps even the government to blame? One official, Chris Oynes, Associate Director of Offshore Energy and Minerals Management Program retired a month early, was he responsible?  What do you think about BP? Do you trust them?

My Friend Jason Magidson has been a great advocate for the Trust Tour. He has connected me to a number of resources, a pay-it-forward kind of guy. Well, I made it past the doubt of day 99 and onto the opportunity of day 100. So I would like to ask you a question… How am I doing? Am I on the right track? Does this have value to you? Is trust really the #1 issue in our lives. Isn’t it a bit strange that we start our children’s lives with a lie about a big fat man in a red suit and a white beard. His name is Santa Claus or Father Christmas or St Nicholas. He can fly around the world in a sleigh pulled by reindeer at unheard of speeds.  Despite his hefty size he climbs down chimneys and delivers over a billion toys in one evening.  This same guy can see every kid while they’re sleeping and awake, and knows if they’ve been bad or good (a little creepy). He lives at the North Pole with a bunch of little guys with pointy ears making over 5,000,000 toys a day. With all these amazing things he can do, no wonder so many love Christmas.

Now the down side… remember when you found out that Santa was a fake? Who told you? An older brother or sister? A friend? Or maybe you over heard it from adults talking. How did you feel? Was your heart broken? Could it be true that the people you trusted the most made the whole thing up?  I remember the day our youngest son found out there was no Santa Claus. I really believe it was a devastating for him, he looked at us like, “how could you?”

sc1261163933I guess now that I am older I’m really starting to question if it’s worth it.  I don’t want to break their hearts and tell them that I really made the whole thing up.  If was going to be a parent again, I’ll think I would tell them right up front that Santa Claus is not real, but that is it still fun to pretend. For me, it’s too painful to betray our children. If we want our culture to be one of honesty and integrity it needs to start while they are young. Shouldn’t we tell them Santa Claus is made up? Can’t we still pretend? I do not buy into this culture of lies. We need to rethink these stories and help tell stories that build trust between kids and their parents.

Why did we fabricate this story for our children? Is it because it is fun? Does it help our kids behave? Do we continue the lie because everyone else does?
